MESCHERS AND THE CAVE DWELLINGS
DWELLINGS IN THE ROCKS
South from Royan Meschers welcomes you on an extraordinary site where man has hollowed out dwellings in the white rocks facing the water of the estuary of the Gironde. These caves may have a long history, but it is not until the 19th century that man starts making dwellings here. The best moments to visit the caves are during sunset when the sun skims the rocks with a golden layer, or during the night openings on Tuesdays, in the summer.
